About Almond Blossom by Vincent van Gogh

Van Gogh painted Almond Blossom in February 1890 to celebrate the birth of his nephew, named Vincent Willem after him. The painting was a gift for his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo — large almond branches in bloom against a bright blue sky, inspired by Japanese woodblock prints Van Gogh admired deeply. It hung above their bed. Today it's one of the most recognized and beloved works in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
